Chapter 6

Cormac

By Saturday, we have had a steady stream of new customers. I don’t know how she did it, but she’s a friggin’ genius. The place is bustling with college students. I thought the regulars, also known as the crotchety old men, would balk at them, but drinking is a multigenerational sport apparently. Finola has been making what she calls “pub grub” and it’s flying out of the kitchen. Tomorrow is St. Patrick’s Day and it’s a pretty big deal ‘round here. I have a bit of a lull between the lunch crown and the late evening crowd, so I head out to the shops. I walk down the street until I get to Gallagher's Fine Jewelry. Once inside I head to the engagement ring section and pick out the first ring that screams “Finola.” It’s a pear cut emerald with diamonds around the band. It’s understated and perfect just like her. It’s absolutely insane to get married after knowing someone less than a week, but I know that I’m not wrong about her. I love her and I want to spend the rest of my life with her.

After purchasing it, I head back to the pub, where I run into Sully on his way out yet again.

“What the hell have ye been up to Sullivan Whelan?” I ask, clapping him on the back. I haven’t seen him in days, and I am curious as to what’s going on.

“Nothing much. I got a job of sorts. Odd hours,” he says cryptically.

“Where at?”

“I can’t say.”

“Are ye a spy or something?”

“Not exactly. See ye later,” he says brushing past me. I shake my head and enter the pub.

“Oi, Cormac. I need a pint,” Grady says from the bar. I love Finola, but she can’t pour a pint to save her life, but no one has the heart to tell her, myself included. Getting behind the bar, I grab his glass and pour him a Guinness, Black and Tan.

“Perfection,” he says drinking it down.

“Ready for tomorrow,” I ask him. He is the town's parade coordinator. Technically, he is the city mayor, but this falls under his purview and he wears many hats.

“Very much so. This is me last bleedin’ drink though. I gotta be up at the unholy hour of six in the bleedin’ morning to make sure the floats are ready by eight,” he says. I chuckle.

“Maybe one more pint, on the house?” I ask empathizing with him. Six in the morning isn’t a fun time to have to wake up.

“Maybe one more, but don’t ye goin’ and telling me harpy of a wife,” he says.

“Your secret is safe with me,” I say pulling him another.

“Yer a good lad, Cormac Whelan. What are you going to do about little bird in the kitchen?”

“I’m gonna marry her, if she’ll have me,” I say honestly.

“You should do that, before one of yer brothers or yer cousin snatches her away from ye,” Grady says finishing off his drink.

“I plan on it. I’ll ask her tomorrow,” I say.
